Extreme Home Makeover -
Hurricane Katrina Memorial
Biloxi, MS

Hurricane Katrina barreled ashore on August 29, 2005.  So many lives and homes were destroyed.  Ms. Veglia's own home was flooded with 8 feet of water as is evidenced in the pictures below showing the home in various stages of remodel.  ABC's Extreme Home Makeover TV Program recruited Elizabeth Veglia Mosaics create a mosaic as part of a memorial to the survivors and victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Ms. Veglia was honored to accept the challenge.  The Hurricane Katrina Memorial now stands on the Town Green in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Ms. Veglia has been commissioned to complete both public and private memorials.  The durability and colorfastness of tile lend themselves well to the creation of lasting monuments.  As Hurricane Katrina has shown, some mosaic memorials outlast the buildings that framed them, a testament to their strength.  Some of these projects have involved the community under the direction of  the artist, building together something that will live in public memory.  At times the very process of creating the memorial  becomes a part of living communal memory.

"A luminescent Earth, Moon and Space Shuttle begin to take shape against a swirling star field of deep blue, as artist Elizabeth Veglia carefully selects the next colored tile fragment.

StenniSphere, the visitor center at NASA Stennis Space Center (SSC) near Bay St. Louis, Miss., commissioned Veglia, a renowned mosaic tile artist from Hancock County to design and create a memorial mural in honor of America's fallen astronauts. When completed, the mural will be permanently displayed at StenniSphere."
